A dream inspired Victoria Villalba’s concept for her submission to the Ironbound Business Improvement District’s 14th Annual Anti-Litter Poster Contest. His concern about seeing people trip over litter on a local sidewalk motivated Miguel Carrera’s contest entry.
Their hard work and creativity helped Hawkins Street School win first place for the fifth to eighth grade and the Wilson Avenue School win first place for the first to fourth grade, respectively. Dozens of posters were entered by students from Ironbound elementary and middle schools participating in the contest which draws attention to the IBID’s “Let’s Work Together to Keep the Ironbound Clean” quality of life initiative. Leysly Roldan, IBID Office Manager, coordinated the contest with the schools.
Villalba, an eighth grader at Hawkins Street School, was supported by Art Teacher Dawn Maglio, Vice Principal Cristina DiTaranto and Principal Sandra C. Marques. Carrera, a third grader at Wilson Avenue School, was assisted by his Teacher, Ana Feijoo, Art Teacher Xiomara DeJesus and Principal Margarita Hernandez.
IBID President Steven T. Yglesias was joined by Treasurer Renato Baptista for the presentation of trophies to the winning schools, congratulating them for their effort in support of a cleaner community for the Ironbound’s young people as well as their families, friends and neighbors.
Seth A. Grossman, IBID Executive Director, noted that the IBID will print thousands of posters and postcards featuring the work of the winning students for distribution in Ironbound schools and display in the storefront windows of merchants and restaurants throughout the Ironbound District. The postcards provide information about the Ironbound District’s trash pick-up and recycling schedules as well as rules and regulations regarding waste disposal.
