The NJ Devils met the Detroit Red Wings in the 1995 NHL Stanley Cup Final, the franchise's first championship appearance, after taking down their Metropolitan Division rival, the Philadelphia Flyers, in the Eastern Conference Final. The team claimed their first of three league titles in a convincing four-game sweep, with Claude Lemieux being awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy as the Most Valuable Player of the 1995 Stanley Cup Playoffs.
In the 2022-23 season, the Devils beat the Red Wings 2-1 in their three games. The Devils two wins against the Red Wings were on the road in Detroit, where the team dominated with a 6-2 and 5-1 victory, respectively.
The Devils took the first victory of the 2023-24 season between these two teams with a 4-3 win, the game winning goal coming from Haula. Their second matchup on November 22 resulted in a 4-0 loss for the Devils. The Devils beat the Red Wings on December 23 at home with a final score of 3-2, Meier netting two of those goals.
So far in the '24-25 season, the Devils took on the Red Wings on two occasions. The Red Wings claimed the first game of their season series in October, while the Devils fought back to take the victory on November 29.
