Hudson River Rivalry

The storied past of the NHL’s Metropolitan Division includes matchups between the New Jersey Devils and the New York Rangers spanning nearly 50 years and more than 250 total games. With the Rangers’ home rink, Madison Square Garden, just across the Hudson River from the Prudential Center, these “cross-river rivals” share a fierce history.

In their regular most recent playoff meeting, the Devils defeated the Rangers in the first round of the 2022-23 playoffs. After battling for seven games, the Devils shut out the Rangers in a 4-0 Game 7 victory at The Rock. The Rangers bested the Devils in all 4 matchups of the 2023-24 season.

The 2024-25 NHL season features one more matchup between this heated rivalry. The Devils faced the Rangers on the road on December 2 and January 9. On December 2, the Devils defeated the Rangers in a 5-1 victory at MSG. In similar fashion, the Devils shut out the Rangers 5-0 on December 23 in a home win. The Rangers traveled to the Prudential Center on December 23, winning in overtime 3-2 against the Devils.
