Description
There is a prevalence of seeing periurbanisation as a condition of 'becoming urban', wherein it is often assumed that the periurban is a temporary stage of transition between an old rural socio-spatial order to a new urban socio-spatial order. This teleological assumption of transition cannot be universally applied. There is thus, a need for a perspective that involves a relational approach, especially in long-settled, agrarian landscapes. The periphery of south-west Kolkata, in which the case study focus of my research is located, is such a landscape.
