CITY OF NEWARK REMINDS RESIDENTS CITY HALL WILL BE CLOSED
ON MONDAY, JANUARY 16, IN OBSERVANCE OF DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. DAY
Police, fire, and other uniformed emergency services will be unaffected;
Street-sweeping and garbage collection services will be suspended;
Paper recycling will take place as normal

Newark, NJ – January 12, 2022 – Mayor Ras J. Baraka reminded residents today that City Hall will be closed and all non-emergency Newark municipal services will be suspended on Monday, January 16, in observance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Police, Fire, and other uniformed emergency services will be unaffected. Trash will not be picked up, but recycling will be.

Newark will host the 35th Annual “Sing in Praise of King” celebration of the life of the Nobel Peace Laureate and Civil Rights leader, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, on Monday, September 16, at 7 p.m. at Newark Symphony Hall, located at 1020 Broad Street. This event is FREE, and open to the public. The doors will open at 6 p.m.

Garbage collection that would normally occur on Monday, January 16, will take place on the next normal collection day in Zone A, Thursday, January 19. Therefore, residents should not put out their trash on the morning of Monday, January 16. On Thursday, January 19, their regular collection day, residents must place their refuse and bottle and cans recycling at their curbs for pick-up.

Street-sweeping services will also be suspended, and paper recycling will occur as normal on Monday, January 16.

In addition, the Bureau of Vital Statistics will be closed. Residents will not be able to apply for permits, birth certificates, name-change certificates, marriage licenses, or pay water or tax bills at City Hall.

The Municipal Court will also be closed on this holiday. Residents can make payments on parking and traffic tickets through the website www.njmcdirect.com. To utilize this website, residents will need their summons number, including the prefix, and the City of Newark’s court code, which is 0714.
